SEC Commissioner to Speak at APSE Southeast Region Meeting
Mon. April 24
On the campus of UAB in the Hill Student Center
8-8:45 a.m.: Registration/bagels
8:45-9: Welcome, Region updates, and thanks to our hosts UAB.
9-10:15 a.m.: At the buzzer and on deadline
We’ve all been there. Bordering deadline, you start the basis of what you think the story will be. Then it happens: a buzzer beater, a Hail Mary catch, the unexplainable historical play. The story is scratched, but you’re on deadline. Whether or not your shop still has a print product, or you are online only, there is such a thing of deadline, so what’s the best thing to do when those crazy plays or endings happen at the 11th hour? Tips and best practices from Will Sammon of the Clarion-Ledger, Tommy Deas of the Tuscaloosa News and Brandon Marcello from Auburn Undercover.
10:30-11:45: Protect Your Turf
The Southeastern Conference and pro sports are national players, but for many of us, they are our local bread and butter. So how do you protect your house when the national media is one of your direct competitors? Panel includes Ross Dellenger of The Advocate, Aaron Suttles from The Tuscaloosa News and Rhiannon Potkey of the Knoxville News Sentinel.
11:45-1: Lunch (will be served at UAB)
1-2: Q&A with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey
2:15-3:30: Reaching Millennials from Millennials
How are Millennials getting their news? What do they want to read about? How can we as media entities entice the younger generation to read our material? A talk with three student journalists about the current, and future, of our business.
3:45-4:30: Student Resume critique
