Congratulations to the 2013 class of APSE Diversity Fellows. They are:
— Emily Horos, sports editor for the Cherokee Tribune (Canton, Ga.), who also has worked as a reporter, freelance photographer, designer and assistant sports editor in her 10 years in the business.
— Johanna Huybers, sports editor at the Reno Gazette-Journal, who worked her way up from clerk, to copy editor, to copy desk chief, to assistant sports editor to her present position during her seven years in Reno.
— Erik Horne, sports web editor at The Oklahoman, who edited, designed, reported and shot photographs and videos during his five years as either sports editor or sports writer at The Ardmoreite (Ardmore, Okla.) before recently taking his present position.
-– Marcus Vanderberg, sports content editor at Yahoo!, whose job titles over the past 6-plus years include online producer with Hearst Digital Media, editor at Mediabistro,com, online producer at Viacom, Inc., assistant programming manager at AOL Services and fantasy baseball reporter at MLB.com.
This is the third year of the APSE Diversity Fellowship Program. APSE is the major sponsor, with support from Indiana University, which hosts a weekend of academic training, and a list of sponsors still being finalized.
This year's Fellows are expected to begin their experience this fall at Diversity Weekend in Indianapolis (date TBA), where among other things they will take part in orientation, panel discussions, public speaking and simulated coverage of a sporting event. They will also serve as members of the judging committees for this year’s APSE web contest, and will join membership to help judge at the winter conference in Indianapolis on March 1-5.
The program also includes participation in APSE’s Sports Management Program, the Sports Journalism Institute, the summer conference in Arlington, Va., and the professional development day for each Fellow’s region. The training will prepare them to take a substantive leap forward in their careers as part of an overall push toward improving diversity by APSE.
