Q&A with Diversity Fellow Jane Allison Havsy, multimedia journalist at Daily Record in Parsippany, New Jersey. Havsy is a Bronx native and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
How did you get your start in the business?
Do you remember Stephen Glass, who got busted for making up stories for major publications (and was played by Hayden Christiansen in the movie Shattered Glass?) He was in charge of The Daily Pennsylvanian, and convinced me and my friend we’d be the next Woodward and Bernstein.
What is your favorite sport to watch, cover and play?
I love the Olympics, and I dream of getting to cover one. Until then, I particularly enjoy track – especially field – and soccer. The only sport I ever claimed to play is basketball, but that was a long time ago.
What have you learned from being an APSE Diversity Fellow?
I learned how much support I have, mostly from people I would likely never have met without APSE.
What is your dream job?
Someday I’d like to get paid to tell people’s stories while traveling.
Your twitter avatar is a Komodo dragon Is there any significance to this?
Komodos are my favorite animal, and I have seen them in zoos around the United States and the U.K. – where I met the Komodo from “Skyfall.”
You are a big reader. How many books did you bring on this trip?
Five. A mystery I read on the flight down, Chick lit that I already read and passed on, “Band of Brothers” which I found at the airport during my last APSE trip, a novel I am reading now and a non-fiction hard cover from the library near my office.
I understand you tried out for Jeopardy! What was that experience like?
If I told you, I’d have to kill you.
