The Gainesville Sun is seeking a sports editor to lead our coverage of University of Florida sports and area high school athletics. It is a high-profile, high-demand job with great benefits, key among them showcasing the award-winning work of our top-flight sports writers and working with the USA TODAY Network to present this on many platforms, including our own gatorsports.com.

The successful candidate will understand the passion and excitement around SEC sports, have a digital-first mind-set, and skills to take full advantage of our opportunities to build our loyal audience around Gainesville, throughout Florida and across the nation. This includes leading analysis, enterprise efforts, recruiting and game coverage. We also place a high priority on high school sports.

While football coverage is now nearly a year-round enterprise, there is plenty of time to enjoy what Gainesville and north central Florida have to offer, from outdoor recreation, proximity to both coasts, and nearby metro hubs like Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa. Gannett offers a full array of valuable benefits, including flexible time off and work environment.

The ideal candidate will be collaborative by nature, have a track record of guiding innovative daily and enterprise work, be proficient in the use of digital media, well-versed in using metrics to inform content decisions, have strong editing, writing and organizational skills and set high standards to elevate the quality of their work.

Candidates must be able to multi-task, have a strong knowledge of AP Style and good people skills. We interact daily with colleagues in newsrooms across Florida, as well as a digital optimization team and national design center.

The editor in this position will work with a team of local reporters, a photographer, freelancers and interns. Coordinating the work from our diverse staff will require excellent time management and communication skills.
