The first joint venture between the Associated Press Sports Editors and Scripps

Howard Foundation took place at Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications on Nov. 12 in Hampton, Va.

The project was started to help APSE’s goal of increasing diversity in newspaper’s sports departments.

More than 80 college and high school students attended the one-day event entitled "A new day for journalism and continued hope for diversity." The program included two panel discussions along with one-on-one sessions for students with the 16 journalists that were in attendance.

Top newsroom leaders from the Washington Post, Orlando Sentinel, Miami Herald, ESPN.com, The Virginian-Pilot, Daily Press of Newport News, Richmond Times-Dispatch along with journalists from the Miami Herald, ESPN.com, The Virginian-Pilot, Richmond Times-Dispatch and Newport News Daily Press volunteered their time.

Two Hampton students will receive $3,000 stipends for an internship this summer at APSE members’ sites.
