The Associated Press Sports Editors are sponsoring four $1,500 scholarships for collegiate sports journalists.

Here are the details:  

APSE, a national organization of sports editors, is awarding four scholarships to help motivate talented students to pursue a career in sports journalism. Collegiate sports journalists entering their sophomore, junior or senior years in 2020 as well as graduate students are eligible for the scholarship, which will be awarded based on a student’s journalistic work, academic record, financial need, and geography. The winners will be chosen by the APSE scholarship committee, which is chaired by Phil Kaplan, sports editor of the Knoxville News Sentinel, and includes editors from all sections of the United States. Deadline to apply is May 1, 2020. 

Students: In your letter of application, email the following information to Phil Kaplan at phil.kaplan@knoxnews.com with APSE Scholarship in the subject line. 

  • Personal: Name, address, age, phone number
  • Academic: Copy of your collegiate grades
  • Financial: Brief rundown of your financial situation, with regards to how you plan to pay for tuition
  • Journalistic work: Five examples of sports journalism (usually stories but could also be sections the student has edited), using either links or PDFs
