APSE, a national organization of sports editors, is awarding six $1,250 scholarships to help motivate talented college students to pursue a career in sports journalism. Collegiate sports journalists entering their sophomore, junior or senior years in 2022 as well as graduate students are eligible for the scholarships which will be awarded based on the students’ journalistic work, their academic record, financial need, and geography.

The deadline to apply is June 5.

For the second year in a row, two of the scholarships will go to students attending historically black colleges and universities. The Garry D. Howard Scholarship, named after the first Black president of APSE, is made possible due to a generous donation from Ulice Payne Jr.

The four other scholarships are named in honor of former sports editors and APSE contributors Joe Sullivan, Jack Berninger, Roy Hewitt and Tim Wheatley.

The winners will be chosen by the APSE scholarship committee and includes editors from all sections of the United States.

Please include the following information in your letter of application:

  • Name, address, age, phone number.
  • A copy of your college transcript.
  • A brief rundown of your financial situation, with regards to how you plan to pay for tuition.
  • Five examples of sports journalism (usually stories but could also be sections you have edited), using either links or PDFs.
