An award-winning, seven-day-a-week newspaper and online media outlet in Lewiston, Maine, is adding an Assistant Sports Editor’s position. We’re looking for someone who is willing and able to help lead one of the best pound-for-pound sports departments in the country. The ideal candidate will be organized and have a keen attention to detail. They will be able to edit copy, coach reporters, run the slot, write headlines and help conceive and execute short- and long-term projects. They also will be active digitally and write features and the occasional game story.
The assistant sports editor will have a chance to put their stamp on the section through collaboration with the sports editor, as the two of you constantly brainstorm new ideas and team up to elevate every aspect of the Sun Journal’s sports coverage. We pride ourselves on our high school and local sports coverage, and have been nationally recognized for our efforts. We are looking for someone who can meet those expectations, and help lead us to even greater heights.
Core requirements include a four-year college degree in journalism or communications, or commensurate experience; intimate knowledge of and proficiency in the basic skills of journalism — writing, reporting, storytelling, AP style; knowledge of and proficiency in social media and other practices of digital journalism; and full-time reporting or editing experience. Knowledge of Adobe suite programs is a definite plus, as is the ability to take sports action photos.
