President’s note: We’ll be introducing you to current leadership in each of APSE’s regions in an occasional series we’re calling “Meet the Chairs.” First up, the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Mid-Atlantic chair Jim Reeser, left, and vice-chair Burke Noel

Jim Reeser, sports editor at The Citizens’ Voice in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and Burke Noel, sports editor at PennLive and The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, are the new chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, of the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Let’s get to know a little bit about them.

Jim Reeser, chair

Jim, a 1996 graduate of Penn State, began his career as a reporter and sports editor at the Gettysburg (Pa.) Times. He joined the Voice in April 1999 and was a reporter, copy editor and assistant sports editor before being named sports editor in June 2013.

During his tenure as sports editor, the CV staff has won multiple state-level journalism awards as well as 15 top-10 awards and several honorable-mention awards in the APSE contest.

Burke Noel, vice chair

Burke has been the sports editor of PennLive and The Patriot-News since July 2015. His team won eight APSE awards in the 2016 contest, including top 10s in breaking news, beat writing and explanatory writing.

He has also coached 18 first-time winners in the APSE writing and video contests. Six of those winners came in explanatory writing and six were in breaking news. His teams are also 6-for-6 in the web contest.

Before arriving in Harrisburg, Burke was the sports editor at The Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal and the Spartanburg (S.C.) Herald-Journal.
