Nominations are now being accepted for the 2016 Red Smith Award. The award is presented to a person who has made major contributions to sports journalism.
Bob Ryan was last year’s winner and the next five people in the voting are automatically nominated for this year’s award.
The five automatic nominees are Henry Freeman, Leigh Montville, Sandy Rosenbush, GeorgeVecsey, and Sally Jenkins.
Others who received votes last year, but must be nominated again, are Kirk Bohls, Tom Callahan, Rich Clarkson, Leon Carter, Helene Elliott, Richard Kyle Fox, Terry Pluto, Glen Schwarz, Terry Taylor.
Nominations will close Monday, February 15. When making a nomination please include biographical information advocating for the person.
Ballots will be sent out Wednesday, February 17. Biographical information will be included in that ballot for both the automatic nominees and new nominees. The deadline to vote is Friday, March 4.
