I’m excited to announce details of our APSE region meeting July 16 and 17 in San Antonio.

We’re going to have an agenda that we hope gives you helpful professional tips and access to some newsmakers. There are chances of some changes as we could get another coach to sign on, and we’re hoping to address the concussions issue.

Here’s what we have so far:

Friday, July 16

Noon-1 p.m.: Registration/check-in.

1-2 p.m.: Videos…blogs…chats — Let’s hear from various sports departments about what seems to be working on the web to build their audiences.

2:15-3:15: What steps can sports departments take — particularly the smaller ones — to ensure that both their print and web operations can co-exist without draining the life out of each other?

3:30-4:30: Larry Coker, football coach of UTSA

6: Dinner and networking

Saturday, July 17

9-10 — How do we pay attention to long-term staff development at a time when almost all of our focus rests on getting through each edition?

10:15-11:15 — The art of the craft — national award winners

11:30-1 p.m. — Awards presentation/lunch

1:30-2:30 — As most of us cut back on travel — whether it’s with pro teams or high schools — what steps can we take with our sections to retain readers?

2:45-3:45 — What can we do to build on the content sharing that has taken place around the state with the larger papers? is there something that smaller papers learn from our experience and build on?

4-5 — Cutbacks have hit our copy desks particularly hard. What should we do to help ensure quality control when we have smaller editing staffs?

Registration will be $50, which will include dinner Friday and lunch Saturday. To register, please send a check made out to TAPSE to:

Pamela Collins
Administrative Assistant
Associated Press
4851 LBJ Freeway, Suite 300
Dallas, TX 75244

The deadline for registration will be June 30.

The meeting will be held in the Learning Center of the Express-News, at Alamo Street and Third Street.

There are several options for parking. One is on the street, where a quarter buys you an hour. The closest surface lot is $4 a day at Broadway and Fourth Street.

For those of you who would like to stay in a hotel, you can get the Express-News rate of $139 at the Hyatt Regency San Antonio, 1-800-233-1234. Make sure you ask for the Hyatt Regency, which is at 123 Losoya in downtown San Antonio. Please mention the Express-News rate and sign up quickly; I didn’t reserve a room block, so we’ll get the rooms as they are available. The hotel is a four-block walk from the Express-News.

I’m still working on details and getting volunteers to help on panels, so please raise your hand if you’d like to help on a particular topic. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call or send me an e-mail.

I look forward to seeing you!
