Diversity Pledge: Star Tribune is hiring a sports copy desk chief

Star Tribune is looking for a highly efficient editor and leader to add to its sports editing team. This person will be a slot editor for our production team, working mostly at night to publish one of America’s biggest and best sports sections.

This journalist must be ready to manage people and content. This person needs to be able to work well with reporters, editors, designers and photographers.  The successful candidate will learn our strategy and contribute new ideas to improve it.

While print production will be a focus many nights, our three copy desk chiefs oversee the quality of the entire night sports report, so the ideal candidate also has digital publishing strengths and interest.

This person must have a proven record of editing and decision making in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. This person should have experience coordinating a print section with other editors, photographers and designers, and coordinating coverage with reporters in the field. The ideal candidate would have a solid understanding of style and standards, a keen eye for visual storytelling, and a firm grasp of Internet culture, SEO and online analytics. The journalist can discern and develop the skills of the people on the team.

Duties include leading a team of more than a half-dozen editors nightly; coordinating game coverage with reporters and team leaders; determining and prioritizing our best journalism; supporting strong visual presentations; and mastering Star Tribune style.

This position will include night and weekend hours. Sports slot editors are typically scheduled for four 10-hour shifts a week, starting at 2 p.m.

This job requires:

  • Experience editing for print and digital
  • Reliable news judgment
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and juggle priorities on deadline

To apply, please upload a resume and letter explaining why you are the best person for the position.

Some top benefits include: a new downtown office with gym access to Steele Fitness in the building and access to rooftop amenities in warm months; commuter benefits; competitive medical and dental insurance; paid time off; 401(k) matching; tuition assistance; and unlimited digital access to Star Tribune. In addition, Star Tribune has partnerships with many organizations that offer our employees a variety of discounts.
