The Star Tribune is looking for an ambitious editor and leader to add to its sports leadership team. High school sports coverage will be the primary beat this person will lead. This editor will guide our preps reporters and carry forward our legacy of excellent, thorough coverage of Minnesota’s massive high school sports landscape.

As a team leader, this editor also will take on a leadership role for our department. Team leaders help shape coverage strategies and priorities and have a voice in the planning and publishing in one of America’s strongest sports departments.

This journalist must be ready to manage people and content. This person needs to be able to work well with reporters, editors, designers and photographers. A spirit of collaboration is essential. The successful candidate will learn our strategy and contribute new ideas to improve it. The Star Tribune is a leader in digital publishing strategies, and candidates must be ready to add to and improve these plans and initiatives.

Candidates do not need expert-level knowledge of Minnesota high schools to apply.

While leadership will be a focus every day, publishing this content – evening hours some nights, and morning hours on other days – will be a priority, as well.  This is a hands-on, get-the-stories-in-front-of-readers job many days.

Our preps editor also plays a leading role in our high school sports podcast and our annual All-Metro Sports Awards event. Balancing these new-age priorities with traditional to-dos will test even the most organized, ambitious editor.

This person must have a proven record of editing and decision making in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. This person should have experience coordinating coverage with other editors, photographers, designers, web editors, and coordinating coverage with reporters in the field. You must be comfortable posting quickly to the website with an audience-first mindset.

The ideal candidate has a solid understanding of style and standards, a keen eye for storytelling, and a firm grasp of Internet culture, SEO and online analytics.

In addition to our preps beat, this editor will supervise another beat, pro or college, to be determined later.

This full-time position will include some night and weekend hours during the school year.

This job requires:

  • A commitment to coverage that represents and speaks to Minnesota’s increasingly diverse communities.
  • Reliable news judgment
  • Experience editing for print and digital
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and juggle priorities on deadline
