ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Washington Post is the lone media group to earn Grand Slam honors in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors’ writing and sections contest that wrapped up this week in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Post, competing in the A Division (83,000 and over circulation), placed in the top 10 in Daily, Sunday and special sections to go along with top 10 honors in website (more than 2 million monthly unique visitors).
The APSE contest, voted on by sports editors from across the nation, honored the best work in 2019.
Fifteen organizations earned Triple Crown honors, with top 10 recognition in three of the four section/website categories. They are:
Category A: Chicago Tribune; Los Angeles Times; Newsday; Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; Star Tribune (Minneapolis); The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Category B: Courier Journal (Louisville, Ky.); IndyStar; Las Vegas Review-Journal; Omaha World-Herald; PennLive/Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pa.); The Oklahoman (Oklahoma City).
Category D: Columbia Missourian; Marietta Daily Journal; The Daily Progress (Charlottesville, Va.).
Syracuse.com/The Post-Standard, competing in Category C, set the pace with 11 awards in the writing/video/multimedia/photo contests. The Columbia Missourian led Category D with 10; ESPN.com led Category A with nine; and IndyStar led Category B with seven.
Winners will receive their awards in June at the APSE summer convention in Indianapolis.
