Launched on Nov. 2 and named for the late Washington post sports columnist Shirley Povich, the Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism will be a primary resource for research and debate in thepublic discussion of sports and society. The Center will serve as a launching pad for students to learn, actively participate in and develop the journalistic skills they need to meet the challenges facing them as the next generation of sports journalists. The Center supports academic courses, hosts symposiums,seminars, panel discussions, workshops and career fairs, and will become a resource for journalists, academics and the public wishing to explore the complex role of sports in society.
 
The web coordinator is responsible, under thedirection of Center Director George Solomon and in conjunction with the Center Coordinator Beth Mechum, for all technical aspects of running the center’s website which will be launching in October.
 
Duties include:
–Manage center website.  (Assign and edit content from student and professional contributors.  Write original posts on selected sports media topics.  Aggregate/curate sports media stories from the Web.   Select, edit and post photos.  Develop simple graphics for the Web.   
–Social media (Assist in development of social media strategy.  Contribute to/assist in management of center social media presences — FB, Twitter, etc.)
–Analyze visitor metrics and make changes asrequired. 
–Creation of interactive web pages for special projects
 
Requirements:
–Bachelors degree in journalism/communications or related fields.
–Minimum 1 year professional experience in Web journalism.
 
Skills
–Basic to Intermediate HTML and CSS
–Familiarity with Javascript, JQuery and PHP are a plus, but not required.
–Extensive use of a Web content management system (Experience with WordPress is required), including modifying CSS, installing and using plugins and basic theme customization is a plus
–Knowledge of AP style
–Basic image editing (using Photoshop or similar program)
–Basic graphic creation using Photoshop or Illustrator (or similar)
–Basic video editing skills using Final Cut (or similar)
